That was fun. A question remains: when exactly did the Hells Angels leave Apple? Were they still there while the boys were at Twickenham?

As for the Hell’s Angels, there’s no evidence they were around for the sessions. I don’t think there’s any reference to exactly when they left, just that it was shortly after the Christmas Party. Chris O’Dell wrote “several days after Christmas” and most other accounts just say “they left” — so I’m guessing some time in that week between Christmas and New Year’s.

The most detailed story I’ve read is that someone, probably Derek, realized that since George invited them, only he could ask them to leave, but also that George had to be informed of that (which he did by telling them “yes no, yang yin” or something like that). So between that, and Charlotte Martin, and the difficulties in getting the others to learn his songs, it’s amazing he wasn’t in a worse mood in January.

Yeah, that’s exactly the story — and it was Neil (from Anthology):
“They did get asked to leave Apple. I asked them, but they got into that hippy language: ‘Well, you didn’t invite us, so you can’t ask us to leave. ‘In other words, as George had invited them, so George was going to have to ask them to go. I think George did it very well – I can’t remember exactly what he said, but it was like: Yes/no – Yin/ Yang – in/out – stay/go. You know – BUGGER OFF!’ And they said, ‘Well, if you put it that way, George, of course,’ and left.”
(And you’re right about George, I feel the same way!)
